Why using graphic novels would be a good idea in the art room:

-Layering

-Text and image

-Willingness to embrace multiple meanings

-Decontextualization

-Contain multiple narratives

-Can pose big questions, be reflective, or responsive to society

-Develop critical thinking skills

-Can respond to difficult issues constructively

-Can be personally relevant (ex. moral issues, fears, race, gender, fitting in, relationships)

-Unique views of culture and history

-Develop complex thinking skills such as metaphor, symbolism, juxtaposition, etc.

-Deal with difficult or painful memories or events in history

-Provide for difficult discussions about the form and message of the piece

-Teaches composition

-Can be used as team work or collaborations

-Catalyst for writing

-Can make observational sketches

-Allow for narratives and stories
